It could be that your reels are getting dirty (I have had this happen to me). 
HIE is thinner than most other films, so these problems will start showing with
these films first.

When this begins to happen I take a tooth brush and soap and work at the
grooves.  Of course, I could just go ahead and spend a couple of bucks to buy
new reels, but these have served me for the past dozen and I'm too cheap.
