Re: Shadow sprockets

What causes shadow sprockets on HIE, and how can it be eliminated?
Gene Hollander
depends on what it looks like. if its a dark shadow, looking at the film its like a black image of a sprocket, you've got a light leak. load in the dark, don't unload the camera except in darkness.
if its a lighter image, sort of ghostly on the film, is an agitation problem. not enough agitation in developer and fixer. or chemicals are nearing exhaustion. I use developers as one shot chemicals. I reuse the fixer. you'll get a feel for when fixer is nearing exhaustion. for me, about 50 - 70 rolls / gallon of 36. or over a month old. chemicals are cheap.
just one or two inversions with a rap every 30 seconds or so. its not a martini to be shaken.
also check how you're pouring chemicals into the tank. that sometimes is a problem. some people process in the dark, dip the reels into the tankful of chemicals then put on the lid, turn on the lights. when they change chemicals, lights out, pull all the reels out, dump the chemicals, fill with next solution and put in reels. ensures same timing with the chemicals for all reels.
regards.
