I don't think we were heading in this direction yet. The calculations
were very helpful in sorting out some of the reasons for choosing one
format over another. But the calculations make apparent that there are
other reasons people choose a given format. Reasons that are too
subjective to measure or calculate.

The lenses in the most recent version of the SaturnSlide viewer are 78mm
f.l. This is for all practical purposes the "normal" viewer lens f.l.
It matches most camera lenses for perspective control, and covers the
format corner to corner in the viewer.

But is this what you want? I think the 78mm f.l. lenses with a square
format image are excellent. The question really becomes "what other
options do we have for viewer design?".

It can be modified for a different image result. If your end result is
to attain the most effective immersion feel to the image then a MF
viewer could use shorter lenses. 60mm f.l. seems to work for this. You
then get edge to edge coverage with the corners clipped quite a bit.

Then you would use a 60mm lens on the camera for perspective control.

Why not use a 60mm lens that covers corner to corner? I haven't found
any combination of lenses yet that will do this, and the lens
distortions will be too evident in the image. It becomes a practical
limitation. I think an image that fills the entire circle of the lens
field of view is very effective, and is attainable.

This is only one option, it really depends on what final image result is
desired. There is not just one correct way to set up viewer vs. camera
f.l..
