The secret isn't that film in checked luggage can be ruined (although
the airports, FAA and scanner manufacturer weren't telling people
until the photography industry raised a big stink), it's which
airports actually have the new checked luggage scanners. (Once again
people who should know better use security through obscurity.)
Initially they were only at a few major international airports. Even
now they are probably only at international airports. Eventually
they'll probably be everywhere.
The really bad part is that the scanner manufacturer has plans to
introduce this same technology to the carry-on scanners they make.
The photo industry is trying to prevent this because most airports
(outside the USA) do not allow hand inspection so travelling with film
would be almost impossible.
