I've seen those signs at quite a few airports, so a sign at
Phoenix doesn't give away the secret. They are putting the
signs at most or all airports, I believe.

The past year or so I've started checking my tripod, but
everything else I carry on with me. I cut down a tall airline
(garment?) box to about the height of the tripod. My hiking
boots usually go in the same box.
