Oh, this is sweet!  I wish you said this two days ago, Richard, I 
just got a Digi-Key care package yesterday.  I'm going to have to 
built one of these immediately.

If anyone want to follow in Richard's footsteps, the Digi-Key part numbers are:

CCFL bulb: 289-1009-ND  $10.29
inverter:  289-1024-ND  $15.12

The bulb is about perfect, 4 5/8 long, and thinner than a pencil.
