They are indeed!  A pair of them weigh 5.2 ounces.  I
have another lens that we evaluated for possible use
in the viewer.  By comparison, a pair of those weighs
about 4.4 ounces.  So the lenses in the kit are almost
20% heavier.  The lighter, thinner lens has severe
pincushion distortion problems.  I don't know anything
about optical design, but it appears that the extra
thickness of these lenses provide a very worthwhile
benefit.
