I did consider this. However several factors worked against this
idea: removing the remnants of the old leather and glue was hard
on the wood; several big holes, nicks and dents had to be filled
with wood putty, and the original wood was not of very high
quality (cosmetically) and of mixed types. They made the box very
strong, but not for looks. Another option would have been to
cover it with a veneer, but this would have added many more hours
to the project.

Boy this is a beauty! Its already at $860 with 6 days to go.
Unfortunately by the end of the auction it may well be way out of
my play money budget.
