  I've heard that too but perhaps it means that
you just can't violate the OFD rules for projection.

  For example, a perfectly mounted slide with
the window placed at the screen will have 2.5"
separation of the infinity image points. Thus
anyone viewing the slide will not have to
diverge.

  But if you exceed the allowable OFD then the
infinity spacing will go up (if your slide
is mounted to the window rather than to constant
infinity). Thus people sitting close to
the screen will have to diverge their eyes by
quite a bit to fuse the infinity points.
People in the back row will suffer less pain
since the angle of diverging will be less.
