The UK Photography Directory
- From: The Jagnets Team <photo@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>
- Subject: The UK Photography Directory
- Date: Mon, 31 Aug 1998 00:38:57 +0100
Hi, This is our first mailing to the list, so we hope it works.
A short while ago, we created The UK Photography Directory on the Internet
and this provides comprehensive information about people and organisations
in the UK connected with Photography. We have now reached a stage where we
have created a couple of Newsletters and we thought that as this is
directly related to the subject matter of this list, then the members of
the list might like to recieve a copy, so we have reproduced it below.
We realise that this may be considered advertising, but as it is a
newsletter and not direct advertising, we dont think that we are breaking
the spirit of the list. At least we hope not.
Happy reading!
We would welcome any comments on either the Newsletter or the website.

WHY IS THERE A NEED FOR THE UK & WORLD-WIDE PHOTOGRAPHY DIRECTORIES?
The answer to this was easy - there was simply not a comprehensive listing
of people providing
photographic services in the UK, so here at Jagnets we decided to put that
right by creating a
website directory which gives people looking for photography related
services somewhere to
quickly discover "who does what". The massive number of hits that our
website has received is
testament to the need for such a comprehensive directory.
Following the success of The UK Photography Directory, we are in the
process of
developing The World-Wide Photography Directory. This is of course an
enormous task, but
one that our staff are already getting their teeth into??It is our
intention to provide the same
high quality of information about Photography related organisations
globally, as already provided
in The UK Photography Directory. If you are already included within The UK
Photography
Directory, then great news, you will be automatically included within the
World-Wide version
absolutely free! If your are already a subscriber to the UK Photography
Directory and you also
provide services outside the UK, then please submit your non-UK details to
the following
applicable web page:-
http://www.jagnets.co.uk/usa.htm (for organisations in the USA)
http://www.jagnets.co.uk/howto1.htm (for organisations elsewhere in the
world)
HITS
The rate that the UK Photography Directory Website is accessed continues to
be
phenomenal - over 40,000 times in 17 weeks - that's an average of 340 hits
per day!!!!
CATEGORIES
We have just added a category for Galleries - there is not much in it yet,
but if you run or show
your work in a gallery and you are already a subscriber to the UK or
World-Wide Photography
Directories, then let us know and we will add your details in this new
category.
Just as a reminder, here is the list of categories included within our
Photography Directories:-
Aerial Photographers Glamour Photographers
Location Photographers Nature Photographers (NEW)
Portrait Photographers School Photographers
Sports Photographers Studio Photographers
Underwater Photographers Wedding Photographers
Aerial Photography Camera and Equipment Retailers
Clubs and Associations Courses
Digital Photography Equipment Manufacturers
Equipment Repairers Film Processing & Printing
Glamour Photography Models & Model Agencies
Photo Libraries Publications
Studios Galleries (NEW)
PHOTO LIBRARIES SUGGESTION
We have recently had a suggestion that the Photo Libraries section of the
Directory should be
restructured by subject matter, rather than by area. As this is one of the
most highly visited pages
in the Directory, this seems to make a great deal of sense. Let us know
what you think and we
will take your views into account when deciding whether to adopt this or
not. No need for a
lengthy E mail - a quick yes or no will do!
SUBMITTING YOUR INFORMATION TO THE PHOTOGRAPHY DIRECTORIES
The recently introduced on-line submittal service has proved to be a big
success, making
submitting considerably faster and more accurate. We are receiving new
submittals for the
Photography Directories all the time. If you are not already included
within one of our Directories
then you can submit your information on line at one of the following
addresses:-
http://www.jagnets.co.uk/howto.htm (for organisations in the UK)
http://www.jagnets.co.uk/usa.htm (for organisations in the USA)
http://www.jagnets.co.uk/howto1.htm (for organisations elsewhere in the
world)
Generally, new listings are added within just a few days of being
submitted. The FREE initial 3 months period remains, allowing new
subscribers to see for themselves how well the Directory works.
LINK EXCHANGE
This one is for subscribers to the UK or World-Wide Directories only!
One of our most visited pages is our Links Page - this is despite the fact
that we haven't many
links included within it! If you want to be included on our links page and
are willing to put a
reciprocating link for the UK Photography Directory or The World-Wide
Photography Directory
on your own website, then we will be very pleased to do this. If you are
interested, then send us
an E-mail letting us know.
COOL WEBSITES
In the next issue of the Newsletter, we will be including a list of cool
photography related websites
that we have come across whilst undertaking research for the UK and
World-Wide Photography
Directories?.watch this space?.
PHOTO FORUMS (sometimes called usenet groups or news groups)
In our never-ending search for new ideas and information we have come
across a number of Photo
Forums. In these Forums ideas, suggestions and questions are exchanged by
E-Mail. We have
found the Forums to be very informative and interesting. If you want to be
included in such Forums,
then check out the following websites:-

and this is included

of this Newsletter, then

HOWARD SHENKER'S WORK AND WEBSITE REVIEWED
In this edition of the Newsletter we have decided to review the work and
website of Howard Shenker.
You can visit his website or send him an E-mail response to the following:-
Website address http://www.angelfire.com/ny/zorg13/
E-mail address alehow@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Howard's work is very interesting and unusual - he uses a lot of hand
toning of the black & white
photographs he takes. His website includes many good examples of these from
portraits to nudes,
and from fire breathers to informal shots at rock concerts.
Howard say's; "I've never really 'studied' photography...I taught myself a
lot by reading books and
shooting a lot of film and then about 2 years ago I decided that I needed
to refine a few techniques
and found a master photographer by the name of Winston Ingram. He is a
Fellow of just about
every photographic organisation there is and he helped me with a few of the
things I felt unsure
about, like hand printing and studio lighting. He is also the inspiration
behind a lot of my hand toned
work."
Howard does all of his own B&W hand printing because he feels it's
important to finish off a print in
the same way that he originally envisioned it when shooting...the lighting,
the mood of the shot etc....
the hand toning is something he started more out of a personal artistic
feel and a way of making a
photograph truly original and to really stand out.
He uses various chemicals and dyes and he says; "Most the time I have a
general idea of what is
going to happen to the print...but never knowing exactly how it will turn
out. Sometimes I'm really
amazed and happy with the results, but it is often a hit and miss kind of
process and I do end up
binning a fair amount of stuff."
One of his favourites and one of the prints he was most surprised about the
way it turned out
was 'My Lady Blue' (see the 'Hand toned prints page of his website'....he
tried a chemical and toner
he had not used before and just got the most amazing results.
Howard's website also has a page containing mild erotica - we not only like
the photographs and also,
find the photo titles amusing - check out "Miss Whiplash" and "Pull
Harder" - two of our particular favourites!
Howard has a group of photographs on his website called 'The Seven Deadly
Sins.' The subject in
these photographs is the man behind the inspiration for much of his work,
Winston Ingram. Howard told
us; "I wanted to enter a competition held by Agfa, the theme of which was
the SDS....I had good pictures
for 3 or 4 of the sins and just couldn't come up with an idea for the
others. I was at his studio one day
watching him have a very animated conversation on the phone when it struck
me that he was able to do
the most amazing facial expressions....the idea was there!" This just
goes to prove that great ideas
often come from the most unusual of circumstances.
Within his website, Howard has a page called "Glastonbury dayz". He is not
really a fan of all major open
air concerts, but Glastonbury does have a special place in his heart and he
enjoys it immensely....most of
the photo's featured on this page are from 95' and 96'. He says "Last year
it was really rainy and muddy
and somehow I managed to drop my camera in the mud on the very first day
and ruined it...it just wouldn't
work. I, unfortunately couldn't make this years festival, but as it turned
out to be even muddier than last
year it probably was a good thing."
Howard does a lot of portrait and portfolio work for actors, dancers,
musicians etc and mainly sells his
B&W work, but more and more people are seeing his hand toned work and
buying either an original or
a signed print. He sells a number of his photographs and one of his most
popular (and best selling) shots
is the picture of the fire breather in the 'Out & About' section of his
website. It has also been published in
Amateur Photographer as Mike Maloney's picture of the week.
"I do a fair amount of work that I have not included on my site too....I
have photographed computers for a
company in Oxford for their price lists and brochures and restaurants use
me to photograph their menus
for in-house training and recipe files, plus I have done numerous shoots
for insurance companies,
jewellery and coins etc.
I also dabble in a bit of glamour photography but always end up getting out
the B&W film and shooting
something a little more artistic than magazine style work."
Howard feels that the hand toning he does has a very good chance of getting
him some wonderful work
or assignments....we think it's terrific for bands for CD covers etc
Howard obviously spends a great deal of time with his photography and we
are sure that he will not mind
a small amount of criticism amongst the praise - Howard, one evening, stay
away from your darkroom
and spend some time working to improve your website! A few things that we
noticed are; there are very
few words to describe what you do, or even that you sell your work!?..the
thumbnails are just a bit too
small?..there is no address for you ??.and finally, a person with your
creativity should be able to see
that black text on a dark grey background just doesn't work! Ok, this maybe
due to different people using
different browsers, but it's worth looking into.
In summary, Howard's photography is very visual, unusual and creative, but
above all, we congratulate
him for his achievements after he has finished pressing his shutter - the
real sense of his work is created
in the darkroom, by using his imagination, experimentation and a strong
sense of wanting to create
something that is eye-catching. Great work Howard, but let's spend a bit
more time on developing that
website???
