Re: About Scanning For Printing
Rick,
What is the purpose of the prints you wish to make on your Epson?
What size film, format, are you shooting?
I recently bought an Epson 800 printer and Epson 636pro scanner to scan
and proof my 6x17 slides. This combo works great for me! The scanner
optically scans up to 600dpi but I use 150dpi for making "contact
proofs" for myself or clients. Any higher dpi is wasted on this size of
a print. I found this out by testing.
The printer can be set to print at 360dpi, 720dpi, or 1440dpi. Each
higher setting makes a better looking print on the same type/quality
paper. Better paper makes better prints at any of the three settings
than prints made on lower quality paper of the same image at the same
settings.
I use the Adobe Photoshop scanning software plug-in from Epson
(Lasersoft) and scan from inside photoshop. I then adjust the scanned
image to look like the original and print. The overall look of the
printed image is somewhat different from the computer screen therefore
after seeing how they were during out I altered the screen image and
they then printed well.
As for negatives, let's just say that I have better results with
slides. The scanner does have the ability to scan negs but I cannot get
them to look or print well. I'm still working on this though.
The price I paid for the scanner and the printer is falling, like all
computer equipment. I have seen recently other flat-bed scanners at
half the price I paid which might do as good or better because they use
the twin scanning areas. I think this is an Agfa innovation.
If I can be of any more help, write.
