About Scanning For Printing

I'm so confused. Hopefully, someone can help.

I have a Photo EX printer from Epson. I don't currently have a scanner, but
am shopping for one, if that is the route to go.

I want to print fairly large panoramas and regular format prints on my
printer.

Should I send the negs/slides out for hi-res scanning on CD-ROM, or is there a
scanner (priced within reason) that can reach high enough resolution to
output, say 14" wide prints on my printer, with acceptable resolution?

I've gone to web sites of prepress scanners, which reach very high resolution,
but is that necessary?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Rick
