I can't be bothered to list, or correct the inappropriate replies that came
due to my outrage . . . BUT, my outrage is founded not on jealously
guarding my profession, (I don't need to, I'm a very good photographer and
businessman), but more on the pathetic excuses that are ALWAYS given by
people in their attempt to be published. First off, if the book publisher
has the money to print and publicize and then distribute the book, he has
the money to pay for photography. Those three items I mentioned are the
MOST EXPENSIVE in any publishing venture . . . the photography represents
only a small part of the budget. Any so-called publisher looking for
"freebies" knows that there are a LOT OF SUCKERS out there . . . that's
you, so he goes after them. Aren't you ashamed of showing the public how
gullible you are????
In a special case, perhaps where the publisher, or editor, is a personal
friend and is looking for a foot up, I could understand the need to
"donate" images, but surely that personal friend would probably offer
shares, royalties, copies of the book, or some other compensation of that
nature . . . after all, at that point it has become a group effort.
Those of you who think I'm crass . . . what do you do? If I, or anyone else
for that matter, started offering the services that you offer, doctor,
lawyer, mechanic, chef, editor, ditch-digger . . . whatever (and they are
all simple to learn) . . . for free . . . just to get exposed, you would be
screaming to everyone in sight.
Face it . . . someone who is desperate enough to give away a hard earned
image to a huckster, either needs some serious therapy (to quell their ego
problem), or MORE likely, their photography wasn't worth anything in the
first place.
