Drew: Here is a key paragraph from the concluding review of the 
UMAX PowerLook III: The Umax PowerLook III is a serious 
prepress scanner, despite its price.
" Descreening is only fair, and scanning negatives is definitely not 
its cup of tea, but these are not crucial for most users. With true 
1200 sample per inch resolution, exquisite color and clarity from 
prints and slides, easy-to-use software, and good productivity it 
deserves the attention of serious photographers and prepress  
operations."
Drew, based on this review (URL follows), I would reconsider this 
scanner for chrome or negative scanning.
