You might wish to try some outdoor panoramas first, as the lighting poses 
less of a problem. Use a tripod, a wide angle and overlap the shots 10%. You 
can shoot any number of shots, but for practice 2 to 4 shots will give you 
the feel of things. For starters download a trial version of Uleads Cool360. 
It will work for 30 days and for it's features is inexpensive (about $40 
US).

Don't do any retouching untill after you stitch. If the results arn't to 
your liking you can redo using retouched copies, but the way a stitch 
program seems to work, I think any retouching is best after a stitch.

I can't help you with the technical aspects of your particular camera as I 
use a Sony Mavica, but I can say that with the Mavica it is best to leave it 
on automatic without any compensations.
