threehundredsixty degrees of enlargements

These are my two current options for enlargements for pan negs:

1. Get a proof sheet completed for the roll & choose the best shot(s). 
2. Enlarge these using an 11x14 enlarger, at my local photo shop.
But the print is still not really that "big". 

*OR*

1. Get a proof sheet completed for the roll & choose the best shot(s). 
2. Scan the proof or enlargement 
3. Print out using Epson Stylus at 1440 dpi, size 8 1/2 by 23+.
For higher quality prints, this can take a long time. 
Getting the color balance perfect is also time consuming.
The results are ok, but not really as nice as the print option, IMO.

I am looking for other alternatives. Please share your thoughts.
