I had similar (but not as bad) problems when I cut down 9 1/2" film for 8"
inch spools. The only way I cured it was to cut the film 1 to 2mm less (yes
we're metric over here!) than the spool width so it had some clearance.
When spool and film were exactly the same size there was a tendency for the
film to roll up the edges, creating a gap for light to leak through. At the
end of the day, having an image area 1mm narrower made no difference at all
to the final image.

Suggest you either make new spools or trim the film down.....whichever is
the easiest :>)
