George-- I went back home this noon to see what bulb I was using at that
outrageous voltage, (I was sure it was NOT a 10 watt version, otherwise
something like 22.5 watts in my beloved Kodak II). It is a 6S6 rated at
50 ma., i.e. 6 watts at 120 and 13.5 watts at 180 with my transformer.
Nothing gets cooked inside, and the bulbs seem to last at least for
as long as those fine 75 or 80 volt bulbs running at 120. It's
white and bright and I like it, although had I not had a huge pile of
the 6S6's at the time I thought there were no more of the others I
probably would not have bothered.

The 13.5 watt estimate assumes that the filament stays constant in
resistance, which it certainly doesn't, and is perhaps appreciably
high. I may have to pull out the meter, measure the current, and see
the the power actually is. Or maybe there's a bulb man out there who
knows these things.
