Back in the "old days" (say 1956) when electronic flashes were new,
manufacturers began to make cameras with a flash sync setting to accomodate
their quick action: X (for electronic) Sync. Magnesium filled bulbs would
take like 25 milliseconds to burn while an electronic flash happens in a
couple of microseconds. Folks still used bulbs a lot as the electronic units
were expensive, bulky and ate batteries. I know because I used to haul one
around on a shoulder strap.
Just as a historical note, the first one I had, I belive, was a Highland
Flash. It had a vibrator dc to ac convertor. It would sit there on your hip
humming, taking 30 seconds or more to come up to charge. One roll of film
and a change of batteries.
Not much to do with 3D but might help to exlpain x-sync to some of the folks.
