Hi, this is a request for advice.

I recently had the luck to obtain an antique stereo camera,
a beauty if I may say so - and if I'm not mistaken.

It is a Gaumont 4x4 cm 12-glass plate "Grand Prix 1900"
with twin Tessars (made by E Krauss in Paris!), with a
pneumatic shutter, ground-glass viewer back (interchangeable
with the glass-plate changer), in pretty pretty good working
condition and well conserved (though the leather case needs
some conditioner). Forget the 50's cameras as far as construction
and detail are concerned: this is a ton of well designed solid
shiny stainless steel, with goodies like a levelling viewfinder,
sliding (rising and falling) front, etc.

For a while I thought I might use it, but I don't think this is
 workable. Too difficult to cut sheet film to fit the holders;
to find development in case of color film; the lenses are, after
all, not computer-designed, etc. I think I'd be better off with a
50's camera, a full tummy from spending some of the proceeds, and
I expect a still somewhat thickish wallet after buying both camera
and -what else?- one of Dr. T's viewers of course, plus sundry
 accesories.

How does one sell such a machine safely, (not in much of a hurry),
and at a just price for all involved? (The camera is now in the US,
shippable UPS whenever one of my relatives visits FL), and I can
mail pictures which can give a pretty good idea of its condition.

A friend suggested an auction house (Philby's specifically), as
there the interested dealers would slug it out among themselves
to my benefit :-) . I *think* the machine should be in the kilobuck
range, judging from prices I've seen on other stuff, but my
problem is I have no idea exactly where on the scale, and I don't (obviously) want to be taken for a ride on this (is that the
 expression??).

I'd much appreciate any ideas on how to proceed, either on the
list (perhaps others are interested in such selling) or via
 e-mail at my <pnovak@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> address.

 Thanks in advance,

                     pno
