Saving Time
Related to the discussion regarding the relative lack of 3-d Beatles
photos, I have a few comments:
I have tried to make it a point to document local dramatic events as
much as possible. I don't live near Hollywood, so, the big movie
stars are not within my reach. But there are things that happen in my
local community that may have some worth, maybe years from now, and
only to historians, but still that in itself has merit.
The event that sparked me into thinking this way was a powerful
windstorm that ran over central Virginia like a freight train two
years back. It caused millions of dollars of damage from fallen trees
and it literally blew apart buildings (and the usual assortment of
house trailers). I live in downtown Lynchburg, in the historic
district. Within view of my home is the First Baptist Church, with a
steeple that rises up well over two hundred feet. It has been a
landmark of Lynchburg for many years. The storm blew off the steeple,
sending parts of it through the roof.
Now, I managed to get shots of the ruined affair. And they have since
replaced the steeple with a stronger and lighter-framed one. But what
if they hadn't rebuilt this landmark of our town? There was debate
among it's parishioners as to if this would happen. I searched my own
collection for "before" images, and even though I dwell two blocks
from it, I only have one shot showing a bit of the steeple in the
upper left corner of each frame, there by accident.
So, I try to get shots of local happenings.
Now, I did get some good shots of downed trees and damaged buildings,
and this is valuable, too.
Again, I am under no obligation to do this, but I feel voices from
future generations that start with "...if only..."
To reiterate:
I have just learned, to my chagrin, that the Tour duPont will not come
through Lynchburg next year. This great bicycle race is a riot of
bright color and presents a great opportunity to get shots that
include repetitive images (all those bikes lined up at the start,
etc.). It has been coming through here for a number of years, and I
had always been saying "One year I need to get a few shots of that..."
The route has passed right by my home. Now, I'll have to travel many
miles to get these images (guilt, guilt).
