Re: Mounts - one last time

#I would not draw the same conclusion just because a couple of guys in
#photo-3d have strong opinions about their mounting preferences. I would
#say that most people use the cardboard mounts because they are cheap and
#(in their opinion) look good. RBT mounts are a recent addition and they
#are gaining ground fast.
This is good advice. I think it depends somewhat on your intended use,
as well - for example, I'm told that the Chicago Stereo Camera Club
_requires_ that slides mounted for competition be in aluminum/glass.
The Rocky Mountain Stereo Club in Denver (I am a member) has no such
rule, and typically 75% of the slides entered are mounted in cardboard.
I'm a mostly-cardboard guy myself ('cause I'm cheap ;) This week I went
to an RMSC meeting, and on the way, dropped my box of slides (I'm also
clumsy ;) after locking my keys in the car (I'm also forgetful ;)
They were all cardboard mounted, and I usually tape _only_ the top
of the film chip. Someone recommended to me that this gives the
slide expansion room, so they are less prone to "popping" in the
projector. One of the slides I was going to submit apparently took a
bad hit, and the left film chip was rotated several degrees (apparently
I need to tape a _longer_ portion of the top of the film chip).
Anyway, I'm planning to start bringing my slides for competition in
RBT mounts, as they will help avoid that problem, and probably help
ensure more precise mounting for projection. I'll still use cardboard
for the bulk of my stuff.
Dave - what I would recommend is that you try various mounting styles
and use what works for _YOU_. You can get a sample mount pack from
Reel-3D that contains several different kinds of mounts (for about
$4.95 when I bought one, not sure what they cost now). Dennis
Sherwood was at least at one time giving out free sample packs of
his EMDE mounts. And if you email me your postal address I'll be
happy to send you free samples of the cardboard mounts that we
sell, and a sample RBT mount.
You may find, like I do, that there is no overall _best_ mount for
you, but that you mount different slides using different mounts.
