I have one of the early prototypes made at University of California at
Santa Barbara (UCSB), with good parabolic mirrors, and I can tell you
that quality of the mirrors is the key to having a complete illusion.

Try shining a penlight or match near a small wad of crumpled paper
placed to look as if it is at the center of the top hole. The light
from the match will "shine" on the virtual object at the top, and helps
the illusion. Ask observers to try to "light" the wad of paper with a
match. The match will get very close to the paper (apparently), but
will not set it on fire.
