Synchronization of electronic flash is not a problem with the Realist.  You
can use any shutter speed you like.  From your posting it is not clear what
the guide number of the flash is.  The GN is a measure of the light output.
An aperture of 5.6 should give good pictures at 12-15 ft.  The shutter
speed will only affect the amount of ambient light (not the flash output).
