As owner of a small mail-order business, I have never understood why so many
people think that verbal orders are so much more efficient than written ones.
Dictating detailed information to someone and having it passed down a chain of
command is probably the worst conceivable way to place an order! In my 30 years
(off and on) in and around mail order businesses, I've never seen a written
order screwed up very badly, but I've seen hundreds of verbal orders
misinterpreted, misfiled, misdirected, and generally the cause of much misery
(and expense) all around.
