There are two basic decisions to make before looking for a viewer. If your
prints are going to be bigger than 2 1/2" square then you will need a viewer
with prismatic lenses. If your prints are smaller than 2 1/2" sq. then you
can use a straight lensed viewer (one with conventional lenses).
The viewers for the smaller prints are cheaper. The cheapest is the Taylor
Merchant 707, but it is flimsy. A Franka viewer with scissors focus is
available but I have never used it. Another fold flat mailable, sturdy, and
good , viewer is sold by either Stereo Type or Added Dimension (I think).
These are cheap and pretty good.
For the larger prints a prismatic lensed scope is needed. These come in
many price ranges and also work for the antique sized view cards as well as
personal photo's. I sell this style of viewer, and prices start at $38.

The best "idiot proof" (as you requested) one is probably the Loreo budget
model (at Reel-3D) I haven't used one, but it is very simple and I think it
has prismatic lenses for viewing the beamspitter photo's.
To be perfectly correct ( is there any other way to be correct?), you can
easily view the smaller prints on the larger scopes by just separating the
prints more.
