George-
You really hit the nail on the head with this posting, and not just as it
relates to wedding photography.
In just about all aspects of commercial/professional photography, customers
demand prints. There's no way around it. When they see stereo prints via
ViewMagic, they are impressed with it AS A SUPPLIMENT to their 8 x 10s, but
not as a substitute. Show them slides and they Ooohhhh and Aaaaahhhh for a
couple of minutes, but then they get crazy when you tell them that they
can't easily get their nice photo albums from the chromes. Understandably
so.
That's why I'm trying to research getting a practical, maneuverable
twin-rig going. I think we've got to shoot the 24 x 36 mm format to make
prints practical (economical), and twin SLRs are not usable location rigs.
If we could come up with a good usable and affordable P & S twin rig, you'd
see significant interest and acceptance of stereo as a commercial medium.
Unfortunately, I have a long way to go on this front. As Bob Manle
communicated to me last week, and I agree, an typical automatic rig just
doesn't give you the control over DOF that 3-D demands. This is also a
major problem with the FED cameras. Anything we come up with would have to
have some aperture control, and some ability to lock in a workable
hyperfocus setting. If we can't get the rig set for f/16 focused from 5
feet - infinity (at a minimum), then it is useless.
Wish I could say I was close to a solution. I'm not.
