This simply isn't true. Here in the Detroit area, both the major drug store chains, Arbor and Rite Aid, stock slide film. Arbor stocks both Kodachrome and Ektachrome. Target (a dept. store) carries slide film. I don't have a Walmart near me, and I don't shop K-Mart anymore (even if their HQ is in the Detroit area) so I can't comment about those. I would agree you probably won't find slide film at the 7-11 or Circle-K. So buy elsewhere.
