Slide Film Availability (In My Town) Message-ID: <10ce2310@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>
I live in Lynchburg, Virginia (the central part of the state. There are about 80,000 - 100,000 people in this area.
I can get slide film in two places:
Ritz Camera (at the Mall)
Lynchburg Camera (Downtown)
I think some of the photo labs carry it, but I have never checked, because they keep such funky hours (and some aren't open on the weekends).
The prices run about $7-$10 for a 36 exp roll of Kodak Ectachrome. This does not include processing. I pay $7 for a 36 exp roll for unmounted, same day service.
Lynchburg Camera (a "real" full-service camera store) stocks other brands of film and commands higher prices (for just about everything).
[Side note: I like the people at Lynchburg Camera, and they about flipped when they saw my Stereo Realist with the electronic flash adapter. The owner has one in his "antique & other oddities" camera display, it was his dad's. They made me promise to come back with a viewer and my slides, and give them a demo.]
Sam's Warehouse (a discount megastore) has about 30 linear feet of low-cost Kodak and Fuji print film, at very attractive prices, but no slide film. No slide film can be had at the local drug & department stores. After reading some of the posts, I am considering ordering slide film from B&H in New York. I have bought various cameras and other gear from them, and have never had a problem.
This does looks like a regional (or maybe market size) issue.
PS: Does anyone do their own E-6 developing? Is it a lot cheaper? Is it worth the time/trouble? I used to do a lot of B&W while in high school & college, but have never done color. Aren't there stringent (+- 1 degree) temperature limits, or am I thinking of color print developing?
