I think we all pretty much agree that there are varying degrees of
technicality with any type of photography, 2D and 3D. This is evident in
some of the previous discussions regarding what photos to save and what to
pitch. Technically speaking, anyone can "get into" 3D photography by
taping two disposable cameras together and pressing both shutter buttons
at the same time. This provides stereo pairs which then can be viewed a
number of ways. The "technical expertise" then comes with practice. I
think most people would agree that a wedding photographer's photos are
usually better than "Aunt Martha's" P&S pictures. Why? They both used
color film and had prints made. What's the difference? Equipment and
training! My 3D photos really impress my family because they've never
really seen the media before (well, my parents have!). However I'm sure
that my meager attempts at 3D pale before the likes of Dr T. and most of
the rest of those on this list (we'll find out at expo time!).

Now, why aren't more people engaging in 3D photography? Probably because
there isn't a proliferation of 3D equipment within easy reach of the
masses. Things are changing though. Lenticular cameras are now available
through a number of retail outlets such as Ritz camera shop. And while
it's not the stereo pairs most people often associate with 3D, it's more
than a "flattie".

So, what can we do? Take our funky looking rigs out & shoot! Answer
questions whenever they come up. Maybe take an example of the outcome to
show when people ask you what you're doing. In other words... Promote,
Promote, Promote. Get the word out that you can have your photos LEAP OUT
at you. It's fun and exciting and everyone should try it.

Spread the word & let the world know, 3D isn't dead & you can DO IT!

Ron
