No trial and error necessary for the most part.  It has been determined for
the Nimslo, and should be accurate for the Nishika, that a +1 C/U lens is 28"
distance from subject to film plane, and a +2 is 18". 
I hand held a +1 over a 4 lensed Rittai cheapo camera and got good results
too.

This is a good rule to follow.  Rules of thumb are meant to be stretched
though.  You won't spend much money experimenting.
