Lunar 3-D products
Lunaphiles and moon-lovers,
All this talk about lunar stereo is quite interesting. we have been in
the process of gathering together some lunar stereo products for a
new web page at the Lunar & Planetary Institute. The page is devoted to
lunar exploration and the apollo missions but wont be open till March,
but Ive extracted some of our products into a separate page for general
viewing. These include a few of the surface closeups, as well as vertical
orbital stereo pairs for each landing site. We are also working on a
"movie" incorporating some of the orbital stereo photography. There
is a lot of material out there, but it takes time and often special processing
to bring out. Routing out the surface 3-d is particularly timeconsuming.
The plan for this material is to develop a Solar System 3-D page at
the institute. I already have a lot of other planetary material,
some of which was previewed in the March/April 95 issue of Stereo World.
These and other similar images will be added to this "page" in the next 1-3
months. Ultimately, these products will be used to produce topographic
maps of these bodies. In the meantime, I expect the 1st batch of lunar stuff
will be available by Tuesday. These are somewhat experimental and
i would appreciate feedback on format, viewability, etc, on the images and
the captions, because nonstereophiles will ultimately be viewing them too.
Comments can be sent via PHOTO-3D, or to me at "schenk@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx".
The page location is http://cass.jsc.nasa.gov/lpi.html. Click on
"Hot Topics" and the rest should be easy. Ive formated some of them
in both anaglyph and side-by-side format. Also i am going to pass on
the questions that have been appearing to our research staff and hopefully
we can incorporate some of the information into the support material.
The institute has a library of lunar stock photography, and as we go through
it we will be searching for additional stereo pairs.
