Stereocard Musings

Well, since the subject of classic stereo cards has come up, and
despite the fact that I am limited in my knowledge of the subject,
I have had a couple of questions that have been nagging at me for
quite awhile. So here goes:

    1. Why does there seem to be so many stereocards of U.S. President
McKinley compared with any other president??

    2. I have seen tissue views, and I understand that they are pin-
pricked so that light can enter from behind the cards. This
allows the illusion of stars (twinkling if there is rivalry),
lights along buildings, etc, and with red tissue paper behind
the holes, the sort of eerie glowing red eyes that one sees
in the Diablo series. (I think those are great.)

My question when I see these fragile views is, "Why do they have to
be on tissue paper??" Surely just pasting a real print on a very
thin card would still allow one to easily pin-prick the views,
without the expense and fragility of the tissues. What am I
missing? Is the whole card supposed to glow in the backlight?

Thanks for any help on these questions, naive as they are.
