I've had a number of similar experiences when looking for antique views
in flea markets and second hand stores. Sometimes you just can't uncouple
"stereo" from "sound" for some people. The most memorable episode was in
a pretty run down place where I talked to the woman at the counter for
probably 5 minutes and absolutely could NOT get across what I was looking
for even after saying "photographs" and making a drawing of what they
looked like!

After that, I started carrying around a rather badly lithoed card with
gross misregistration of the images. I took a big marker and wrote
"SAMPLE" across the front of it so that they wouldn't think I was trying
to shoplift something. Now I always carry it with me on searching expeditions
and hold it up and ask if they have "any of these".
