Projection experience

Hi everyone,

I got my lovely TDC-116 projector (and freebie Apollo camera :-) ) from Dr.
T's big sale yeaterday, and had a very small slide show, just to see what it
could do. I think I learned as much about stereo last night as I have since I
discovered this stuff some 5 months ago. This was definitely a humbling
experience! Though my mounting skills have definitely improved over the
course of my 5 rolls, there are mounting imperfections that your eyes can get
around in a viewer that become simply mind-bending on the silver screen.

I'm going to embark on a bit of restoration (for the very dusty vintage
slides) and remounting (for all the slides) before I try this again. Stereo
windows and degrees of convergence didn't interest me in my initial mad
excitement about just plain seeing things in 3-d. I would quickly and
sloppily mount the images, just to see an effect. If the window was off, who
cares? Just look in the middle! Now, however, I'm ready and determined to
do this right.

Of course, many of the slides projected just fine, and I discovered for
myself what's so great about the oft-discussed "ortho-seat." It was also the
first chance we had to see many family slides that were pseudo-stereo by
turning the glasses upside down. Some slides really came to life, while
others were better seen in a viewer. The vintage slides were especially
moving. This is the next best thing to a time machine. I stuck my
girlfriend in the ortho seat, and she saw her grandparents and great
grandmother as they were. It's still quite amazing to me.

I'm sure that the demands of projection will give a kick in the pants to both
my mounting and photographing skills. I'm looking forward to getting better
at this.
