Terminology
The tendency of "Stereo" being interpreted only as relating to a type of
sound, is only further amplified by the new confusion over 3D photography and
3D computer graphics.
Eventually, out of total frustration and desperation, there may come some
standardization.
My frustration comes from trying to search for 3D photography related issues.
Use a search engine and type "stereo" , "3D", or "3-D" and you are bound
to get wanted and unwanted material in each.
We know what we are referring to here on our bulletin board, no matter what
format is used. If the general public interprets "stereo" as sound, we must
be cognizant of that and avoid the usage of that term in public to describe
the 3D photography medium, unless of course your just adamant about trying to
float upstream.
But with new 3D, or 3-D computer graphics emerging, we really should, as an
"industry" attempt to establish some ground rules to help define what's what.
If nothing else, it appears that the emerging usage of 3D by computer
software companies is defining the 3D term as the standard for Images of
Visual Depth. (or IVD, which perhaps the computer industry can adopt)
3D-PC, or IVD for computer 3D?
3D-P , or 3D-Stereo for photography 3D?
But then you get some sound studio that does 16 channel
surround sound and they call that 3D-Stereo ........and all is lost.
I don't know; the options are many.
Since there are mostly 3D computer graphics ventures in the foreground of
advertising, they will probably establish the common usage, whether
photographers like it or not. If we could just settle on 3D or 3-D. I
like the former, less typing.
I hope I didn't use any terms to offend anyone; I realize the government
scanners are being turned on today; George Orwell is vindicated. ..........
