To me, the "ideal" 3-D presentation is that demonstrated by the StarTrek
Holodeck. Getting rid of the window brings me closer to that ideal of "you
are there". The "clutter" doesn't bother me in real life, so I don't
expect it to be a problem in life re-enactment.
Of course, there are differing objectives by different people and by the
same person depending upon situation and mood. Some may demand a system
where the colors can be made into shades of purple or where distortions
can be purposefully done for artistic reasons (along with a lot of other
gross things called artistic). For "doing art" then *anything* goes,
including the keeping of the window or purposefully making the audience
cross their eyes trying to focus on it -- if that's the artist's intent.
That which is "ideal" may change with the wind.
So my answer as to why getting rid of the window is "ideal" is *only* for
the purpose of the "you are there" objective, which is a perfectly
legitimate objective. With a window, it's "you are looking there"
and without a window, it's "you ARE there".
