This has me curious. I mounted my RBT's the same way and projected them in
a TDC 716 with 750w bulbs and noted no such damage. Therefore, the problem
must lie with the cooling system of the TDC 116. My TDC 116 is an early
model and carries an explict warning in the manual not to use 750w bulbs.
According to a photo-3d poster, later models apparently give you a choice.
When I installed halogen bulbs in mine, the heat cracked the ceramic
adapters. Does the wiring and/or cooling fan need to be modified to handle
that much heat? Would modifications be needed for 500w halogens in the
TDC 116? Any guesses out there???
