I don't know about that (though I'm not an archival expert).  Book binders
traditionally use a wheat-paste for gluing down papers, etc.  I think I
remember hearing somewhere that "there's no such thing as an archival
adhesive", though I don't know if it was said half-jokingly.  I also seem
to remember Light Impressions selling some mounting hinges which used
a rice-based adhesive, so maybe the beer idea isn't that far off :-) :-)
