You might look at the following book:

        "Shape from Shading"
        Edited by Berthold K.P. Horn and Michael J. Brooks
        Published 1989 by The MIT Press
        ISBN 0-262-08183-0

It's about 575 pages, and highly technical.  Most of the papers deal with
reconstructing 3d shape information from a *single* 2d image, through
analysis of the illumination model.

I hope this pointer is of some use.  And if you come across a number of
other good sources of information on this topic, please do consider
