I think it's a mix of all these ingredients.... and LUCK. Technical aspects
being a prerequisite, a sucsesfull picture also largely depends on the
subject. A while ago I drove through the country-side in the middle a
beautifull early-winter scenary and noticed two horses under an enormous,
old tree. Very dramatic looking sky, leaves on the ground, all nuances of
brown and yellow and red., a veil of frost etc.
It was sheer coincidence I past through there and that the horses were not
inside etc.
I took my time to make several "calculated" (camera settings, light,
composition, frame, shadows etc.) pictures. Not easy since they kept
following me. :-) Results : Some where ruined because of lack of film
latitude. One was perfect only : It had a pole right in front of the horses
head! Less disturbing in 3D but still........ worthless. I must have been
concentrating so hard on the other aspects I just didn't notice the pole.
I returned but never found the same conditions reunited at that specific
moment. :-(
Then again, I've taken some random shots which (to my surprise) afterwards
turned out to be great.
Patrick.
