Dang if I know.

I suspect it to be a combination of those things you mentioned.

Getting feedback from a club is in the "education" portion, which is why
I intend to try and maintain entries into future competitions that my
club has.  I have a *lot* to learn about 3D photography and once past
inhibitions about being embarrassed, my education can now accellerate.

Experience only helps when it's in combination with education (not
necessarily formal).  Doing things badly for twenty years doesn't
make it good.  Doing things for twenty years and using feedback to
improve over that time *does* lead to quality results.  It's
an industry quality cliche about processes of "continuous improvement".

Talent is something that can help or be overcome, but I think it a
factor.
