Hello All-
Just got back from vacation, caught up with the accumulated digests
and decided it was time to pitch in my two cents after months of enjoying
(almost) every word y'all post. Several factors are bringing me out of
lurkerdom: first of all, I've run across two items that might be of
interest to folks on the listserv. I stumbled across an antique dealer
down in Havana (pronounced Hay-vanna) FL who had an electric postcard
viewer for sale. Though not stereoscopic, it did have two lenses mounted
in a cylinder and was internally lit by two bulbs. (I got the impression
that it was meant to create a sense of depth). All the tag said was 1920's
postcard viewer, $120 though I am informed that the dealer is usually
willing to haggle and is able to ship anywhere. Aside from a dubious
looking cord, it looked like it was in decent shape. Let me add the usual
disclaimer that I have never conducted business with this dealer:
Jim & Betty Kellum
The Antique Center
104 N. Main/ PO Box 863
Havana, FL 32333
(904) 539-1555
The other item I saw that may be of interest is a Nishika N-8000 with flash
for $200. Don't know if the price is fair; never been in the market for
one. To pick up on another thread, one of the things I love about the 50's
cameras I've had the pleasure to hold is not just the design, but the heft-
they just feel more satisfying. Anyway, the Nishika is being sold right
around the corner from where I work, so I'll be happy to pick it up & ship
it out to anyone who sends me E-mail privately. (If you have any
questions, I'll be happy to pester the folks at the camera shop).
The other reason I am posting is to ask a VM question. I'm an absolute
newbie to stereo and have only seen a VM personal once from afar, so bear
with me. I remember a post about an attachment for the Realist to hold an
ID card in front of one of the lenses to fill in the blank frame at the
beginning of a roll. Is there something in the placement of the lenses or
the way the film advances that would keep one from jerry-rigging a similar
attachment for holding a stereopair (Twin-rig, Realist, 7 perf, etc.) in
front of the lenses of a VM camera? Just curious & looking for an excuse
to justify the expense of acquiring one for the collection of stereocameras
that I use....
Back to lurkerland, thanks for your indddulgence,
Matthew, Boston, MA
