I go to the annual SIGGRAPH (ACM computer graphics) convention every year and it
is held in the hottest city in the hottest month (i.e. Las Vegas, Orlando, New 
Orleans this year, etc.) and I have always assumed too that it is a cheap time 
for renting the convention facilities and not that someone was laughing 
somewhere watching us trudge around in the heat ;)
