Kellogs & Lenticulars

Hi everyone...
..jeezz when you fall behind with the reading of your Digests its almost
impossible to catch up.. there just too much to read !!..
Ohh well I'm making progress, only 3 months behind now... (sighhhhh)
anyway, why did I start this post ?, oh yes, just some info that may (or may
not) be of interest... its not exactly 3D related, but...
Some one at Kelloggs (cornflakes...), has obviously "discovered" lenticular
technology. In the UK at the moment they are giving away small (3"x3")
lenticular animations with Frosties. There are 5 in the series, all depicting
tiger scenes. The best one (IMHO) is the one of a leafy background against
which a tigers eyes, as the image is moved a tiger head fades into the scene..
the others seem to be simple two image animation. Kellogs latest offer (on
Rice Crispies, Cornflakes, Co Co Pops) are "Virtual Videos" there is one free
in each pack, and 16 in the series. They are football based (sorry thats soccer
for our friends across the pond) and tiny (around 1.5" square) lenticular
images in a plastic frame, but this time they are real little movies with what
looks to be about 20+ frames of video in each.
You never know, maybe Kellogs will continue this use of lenticular technology
and produce 3D images next...
One thing that did puzzle me was on the Virtual Video the lenticules ran
horizontally (as you would expect..since the 2D frames need to be displayed to
both eyes..ie. no stereoscopy required), but the tigers ran vertically. The only
reason I can think of is that it aids the "fading" effect since as the image
animates both eyes do not always see the same frame in unison..
I also saw another lenticular image today, this time a 3D one, it was in PC
World and was on the box of a PC Graphics card, a so called 3D (forced
perspective really !!) graphics card, hence the lenticular.. Its actually very
nicely done with plenty of depth and colour, a bit cardboard cutout but still
eye catching. The scene is basically a montage of computer generated imagery,
i.e. bits of games, explosions etc and the name of the board that hovers above
the surface of the image. Now, how to convince them to sell me the box without
the card ;^)
