Which Verascope viewer?  What kind of lenses are you using?

It's a fact that ALL tungsten bulbs will produce orange light at low
voltages.  Only at the rated voltages or higher the light will be "white"
(I use quotations because even then it will not be true white... This is
evident when compared with an FL bulb or natural light... However, the eyes
adjust the color of illumination and any bright light source will appear 
to be white in the absense of anything else to compare)

I sell halogen screw base blubs rated 6V/1A (6W) and 6V/1.7A (10W).  I also
have a regulated power supply for the 6W bulb.  These are very bright and
white at 6V. 

Ways to improve color-balance include installing bluish reflectors or using
blue filters behind the slide (between the slide and the light source.

There is a 2 1/4 stereo slide viewer in the market that uses a FL bulb.
Perhaps you can study the design for inspiration...
