A well-known and respected repairman of stereo cameras (not Zak) told
me in Atlanta that he cleans Kodak shutters in an ultrasonic cleaner
using only distilled water. He contends that the ultrasonic
impingement does all the work, even with oils. Hmmm.... He didn't
realize that I was a former customer who had him clean the shutters in
my Kodak Stereo camera several years earlier. The trouble was, the
shutters stuck again after only two months. He was kind enough to take
it back and re-clean it at no charge (disassembled it "completely" this
time, he said, although that is what he had promised and I paid dearly
for the first time). You guessed it, a few months later, the shutters
stuck again. This time I disassembled thje camera myself and cleaned
the shutters and board by soaking in toluene. The shutters have not
slowed since then (over three years use). You can't always trust the
"experts" to know what's best.
For Kodak repairs that I can't handle I now see Don Fraina at 54 Meadow
Drive, Spencerport, NY 14559. Phone 1-716-352-0054. He worked for
the Kodak Camera Repair facility for over 20 years and knows his stuff.
He also repairs Kodak Retinas and Instamatics besides the Stereo. I
find that Don's a great guy to deal with (IMHO).
Best Regards,
Bill Davis
