Sanyo's 3D TV

So what is this Sanyo 3D TV system then?

On a TV BBC2 TV program tonight - "The Technophobe's Guide to the
Future" - they showed a Sanyo 3D TV. The viewers (the presenter's
family) had to wear special glasses and they all seemed to think it
worked quite well.

They interviewed Peter Eldon from Sanyo. He said that Sanyo had
invested a lot of time and money into 3D TV research. He also said,
"the great thing is that you can watch any conventional 2D broadcast
and convert it into a 3D image"!!!!!! He also said that he thought the
set would be on sale in around 12 months at around 2000 UK pounds
($3000) and that he had seen working samples of sets that did not
require the viewer to wear special glasses!

This sounds like a lot of rubbish to me, but I'd like to know what
actually lies behind it. The BBC aren't usually taken in by marketing
stunts and I wouldn't have thought that a respectable company like
Sanyo would stage an outright con. A possible clue is that all the
shots of the 3D set working showed moving (panning) images. Was this
just a spoof by Sanyo using a bit of old fashioned Pulfrich, or is
there a real breakthrough behind it?
