There was a paper presented at the recent Stereoscopic Displays and
Applications conference (Feb'96, San Jose, CA) about the 2D to 3D
conversion technology developed by Sanyo.
The details of the paper are:
"New television with 2D/3D image conversion technologies",
by T. Okino, H. Murata, K. Taima, T. Iinuma, K. Oketani,
Sanyo Electric Co., Ltd. (Japan)
The paper will be published shortly in the proceedings of the
conference - Proceedings of the SPIE volume 2653 "Stereoscopic
Displays and Virtual Reality Systems III"
Their algorithm is based on extracting motion parallax information
from a scene and converting this to stereoscopic parallax. They have
developed a special chip to implement the algorithm. Unfortunately
they did not bring along any demonstration video so I cannot comment
on the quality of the conversion.
