Holophonics that old chesnut

I heard a holophonic demonstration several years ago and found it just as
astonishing as 3D photography. According to the lit, they take sound from
one channel, say the left, delay it by the amount of time it takes to move from
the left ear to the right, and play it out of the right speaker. It arrives
at the
right ear at just the right volume needed to cancel out the left channel sound
that would ordinarily be heard there. Ditto the other way. Some noodling with
response curves was necessary, and the the effect could only be heard in a
small circle about 6" to either side of your head. Turning your head ruined
the effect, as did any motion that brought your ears outside the magic circle.
But inside the circle! Individual singers in a large choir were as perfectly
positioned as they would be if you were actually standing in front of them.
The effect was so excellent that it easily overcame the limitations presented
by the cheap demo disk.
And we thought stereo projection was frought with difficulties. What if only
one person could view the show? What if they had to hold their head still
as well.
It's no wonder that this holographic sound technology never really caught on.
It's more trouble than binaural.
